Warehouse storage layout determines how long every pick takes. A layout optimized for storage density rather than access speed forces pickers to travel farther, reach higher, and search longer for every item. A layout optimized for access speed reduces pick travel distance, puts the right items at the right height, and makes every pick faster. Here are the tips that deliver faster access without sacrificing storage capacity.

Tip #1: Position Fast-Moving Items Closest to the Packing Station

The items picked most frequently should be stored closest to the packing station — minimum travel distance for maximum-frequency picks. Analyze your order data and identify your top 20% of SKUs by pick frequency. Move these A-items to the storage locations nearest the packing station on the 5-tier adjustable shelving at eye-to-waist height. The remaining 80% of SKUs can be stored farther away — they're picked less often, so the additional travel distance has less impact on total pick time.

Tip #2: Store at Ergonomic Height by Pick Frequency

Items stored at floor level or above shoulder height take longer to pick and cause more physical strain than items stored at waist-to-eye height. Store A-items (highest frequency) at waist-to-eye height. Store B-items (moderate frequency) at knee-to-waist height. Store C-items (lowest frequency) at floor level or above shoulder height. The adjustable shelving allows height configuration for each tier — set shelf heights to match the ergonomic storage principle for your specific product mix.

Tip #3: One SKU Per Bin, Labeled on the Front

Mixed-SKU storage locations require visual sorting before picking — the picker has to identify the right item among multiple SKUs in the same location. The labeled clear bins with one SKU per bin eliminate this identification step. The bin label identifies the SKU; the clear bin makes the contents visible for visual confirmation. One SKU per bin, label facing the aisle, readable from the pick path — the picker reads the label, confirms, picks. No sorting, no searching.

Tip #4: Wide Aisles for High-Traffic Zones

Aisles that are too narrow for two people to pass require one picker to wait while another passes — a bottleneck that compounds across every pick in that aisle. High-traffic aisles — the aisles containing A-items — should be wide enough for two pickers to work simultaneously without interference. Lower-traffic aisles can be narrower to maximize storage density. Mark all aisle boundaries on the floor and enforce them — equipment staged in an aisle narrows it and creates the bottleneck.

Tip #5: Post the Layout Map at the Entrance

New team members and temporary workers who don't know the layout search for items rather than going directly to them. A layout map posted at the warehouse entrance — showing zone locations, aisle labels, and SKU ranges — gives every picker the information needed to navigate directly to any item. Update the map whenever the layout changes. A map that's accurate is a tool; a map that's outdated is a source of confusion.
