Power Strip Placement Strategies for Safer Offices

Power strip placement is one of the most overlooked office safety decisions. A power strip placed on the floor becomes a tripping hazard and a damage risk; a power strip overloaded with high-draw devices becomes a fire risk; a power strip without surge protection leaves connected equipment vulnerable to voltage spikes. The right placement strategies eliminate all three risks. Here's how to place power strips for maximum safety in office environments.

Strategy #1: Mount at the Workstation, Not on the Floor

Power strips on the floor are the most common office electrical hazard. Mount the 6-outlet metal power strip with individual switches and 1200J surge protection at the workstation — attached under the desk surface or on the wall beside the desk. All equipment plugs in at the workstation; one cord runs from the mounted strip to the wall outlet. No floor-level strip, no tripping hazard, no chair wheel damage.

Strategy #2: One Strip Per Workstation, Not Daisy-Chained

Daisy-chaining power strips — plugging one strip into another — is a fire hazard that bypasses the circuit protection of both strips. Every workstation gets one strip connected directly to a wall outlet. If a workstation needs more outlets than one strip provides, the solution is a strip with more outlets — not a second strip plugged into the first. Strategy #3: Calculate Load Before Placing

Every power strip has a maximum load rating — typically 15 amps at 120 volts, or 1800 watts. The total should not exceed 80% of the strip's rated capacity — 1440 watts for a 1800-watt strip. Strategy #4: Use Individual Switches for Device Control

Strategy #5: Replace Strips Whose Surge Protection Has Been Consumed

Surge protectors absorb voltage spikes up to their joule rating — after that rating is consumed, the strip continues to provide power but no longer provides surge protection.
