Planning power access before the crew arrives eliminates all of these problems. Here's how to do it.
Step 1: Map the Site and Identify Power Sources
Before any equipment arrives on site, walk the site and map every available power source: permanent outlets, temporary power panels, and generator locations. Note the amperage rating of each source. This map is the foundation of your power distribution plan — every work zone's power needs to be traced back to a rated source on this map.
Step 2: Identify Work Zones and Power Needs
Map every work zone and the tools that will be used in each zone. Calculate the total amperage draw for each zone — the sum of all tools that might run simultaneously. Each zone's total draw must not exceed the amperage rating of its power source. Zones with high-draw tools (saws, compressors, high-output lights) need dedicated circuits; never share a circuit between two high-draw zones.
Step 3: Plan Overhead Power Distribution
For each work zone, plan how power will reach the zone without floor-level cords.
