Practice #1: One SKU Per Bin, Always

Mixed-SKU bins are the primary cause of picking errors in small warehouses. When multiple SKUs share a bin, pickers select the wrong item without realizing it — especially for similar-looking products. The labeled clear bins with one SKU per bin eliminate mixed-bin errors entirely. The bin label identifies the SKU; the clear bin makes the contents visible for visual verification. One SKU per bin is the single highest-impact picking accuracy improvement available.

Practice #2: Confirm Before Picking, Not After

Pickers who confirm the item after picking — checking the label after the item is already in the tote — catch errors after they've occurred. Pickers who confirm before picking — reading the bin label before reaching in — prevent errors from occurring. Train every picker to read the bin label, confirm it matches the pick list, then pick. The extra second of pre-pick confirmation eliminates the minutes of error correction that post-pick discovery requires.

Practice #3: Organize Pick Paths to Minimize Backtracking

Pick paths that require backtracking through already-visited aisles increase both pick time and error rate — pickers who are retracing steps are more likely to pick from the wrong location. At the end of every shift, audit the 10 highest-velocity bin locations: verify the contents match the bin label. Items in the wrong bin get relocated immediately. A 5-minute end-of-shift location audit prevents the cascading errors that a single misplaced item causes across subsequent shifts.
